Strong Foundations Build Trust
The Brooklyn Bridge, with its unprecedented length and two stately towers, opened on this day in 1883. Dubbed the “eighth wonder of the world,” it connected the massive population centers of Brooklyn and Manhattan and changed the course of New York City forever.
Spanning the East River, the Brooklyn Bridge measures 1,595 feet and was the first ever wire suspension bridge constructed. It took 14 years to be built and its creation was pioneered by German immigrant John Roebling, who had earned a reputation in steel suspension bridge design. Mr. Roebling suffered a fatal accident just before the bridge building began and his son, Washington Roebling took charge and saw the bridge project through to completion.
Since opening, the Brooklyn Bridge has become an icon of New York City. In 1898, the city of Brooklyn formally merged with New York City, Staten Island, and a few farm towns, forming Greater New York. The bridge has been designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964 and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1972.
